The Nine of Wands card from the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot

On the card

A bandaged figure leans on a wand, eight more standing in a row behind, watching warily.

Upright

  • Resilience
  • Wariness
  • Nearly there

Wounded, still standing, still watching — traditionally the last stretch and the reserve it takes. It invites you to notice how much you have already carried.

Reversed

  • Worn down
  • Guarded
  • Stopped short

Reversed, the reserve is spent, or the guard has stayed up long after the thing it was raised against went away.

About this deck

The artwork is the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot, drawn by Pamela Colman Smith to Arthur Edward Waite's direction and first published in 1909. It has passed into the public domain, which is why it can be shown here in full — but it is her work, and the reason this deck became the one nearly every other deck answers to.
