Return Charts
Before you begin
A return is the instant a planet arrives back at its natal degree. The Sun does it once a year, within a day of the birthday; the Moon every twenty-seven days and a third. Casting a chart for that instant — the solar revolution, the lunar revolution — is a technique the Persian astrologers wrote down in the ninth century, Abu Ma'shar's *On the Revolutions of the Years of Nativities* among them, and it has been read the same way since: a chart for the year, or the month, set against the chart for the life.
The Persona chart is newer and simpler: it is the first solar return after birth — the sky when the Sun first came home, roughly a year in — read as a chart in its own right. It is cast at the birth place.
Each return is a real chart for a real moment, so it has houses of its own and depends on WHERE it is cast — which is why the solar and lunar returns ask where you will be. Positions, angles and houses; the tradition's word for each; nothing about what the year will hold.
